As of the start of December 2012, Raspbian "wheezy" is the recommended distro for the Raspberry Pi.
The Raspian distro was downloaded from here1 onto my Mac Bootcamped into Windows. The current RPi download page is here2
Win32DiskImager was downloaded from here3. The containing site is here4
The disk imager is used to create an image of the distro on the SD card. Extract the Applciation and install the imager on Windows
Find an SD card and format it. Extract the distro image then run up Disk Imager. Write the image onto the SD card (pretty straightforward)
Eject the SD card from the System tray. Don't forget to delete the Extracted distro image (you may want to keep the zipped version)
Insert the SD card into the RPi and power it up
